Boeung Kak

On the east bank of Boeung Kak ("Boeung" is Khmer for lake) behind the luxurious Phnom Penh Hotel at the south side of the mosque is the famous - or infamous if you prefer - backpackers neighborhood of Phnom Penh. It has been scheduled for redevelopment and soon, the backpackers attraction may no longer be but a legend.

While it lasts, you can be a part of this legend and uncover Phnom Penh's wild side. It may not be as big as Bangkok's Khao San road, but it is much nicer, friendlier and cozier.

The development project is likely to start only after the 2008 national elections and the owners of the businesses at the lakeside secretly hope that the Cambodian Prime Minister will stop the project as he did with the development project of Boeung Kob Sreuv. But that is not very likely to happen.

.

We want to recommend 2 guesthouses on Boeung Kak lakeside for their particular charm:

Guesthouse # 10, the original lakeside guesthouse, where the legend started.

Floating Island Guesthouse with the Terrace Bar, the breeziest bar on the lake.

Run by local youth who have learned how the rest of the world has changed while Cambodia was isolated, suffering from the fallout of a war that was not theirs, by Phnom Penh's avantguarde who want to catch up with the trends in music, ideas and culture which the rest of the world since long takes for granted.

For breakfast, lunch, dinner or a cosey evening, you might pay a visit to Murphy's Lakeside Bar
